Are African Greys good family pets?

All parrot pets love to interact with the family. They especially love to have their head stroked. They do not like to have their body handled very much though. Parrots can get bored easily and harm themselves, so it is best to have someone play with them on a daily basis. At the very least, let them watch TV when you are gone.

Moreover, they have a beautiful plumage of grey color and red tail. You can also say, African Grey parrot is the real beauty with the brain.

Size and Appearance of African Grey Parrots

African Grey parrot is a medium-sized parrot with an average weight of 400 g and an approximate length of an inch more than a foot. The wingspan of the African Grey parrot can range between 18 to 20 inches. The whole body of African Grey parrots is covered by the plumage of grey color due to which they get their name “Greys.” Grey coloration is darker at heads and at wings, which in turn have white edges. The tail is most distinct in the case of African Greys, which is red in color and smaller than any other parrot. Strong black bill and white feathers around the yellow-colored eyes increase their beauty. There is not much difference in the plumage of male and female African Greys, and you can’t differentiate between them by just looking at their feathers. Juvenile birds have a darker color of eyes that range from dark grey to black and can easily be distinguished from yellow-colored adults.

The intelligence level of African Grey parrot

As mentioned earlier, African Grey parrots are one of the most intelligent breeds of the parrots not due to the amount of memory they can store but also due to their way of communication with their owners. An African Grey Parrot can learn as much as 1000 different words at a time. A study conducted by Dr. Irene Pepperberg on the famous African grey parrot, Alex, shows some incredible results. During the study on Alex and other African greys, Dr. Irene learns that not only African Greys can learn an incredible amount of birds but also, they use them in context to communicate with their owners. Mental and emotional capacities of an adult African Grey is as much as of a human five years old child.

Habitat and distribution of African Grey Parrot

Grey parrot is native to the equatorial range of Africa, which includes regions like Angola, Congo, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, and Gabon. African Grey parrots are usually found in small flocks of 25 to 50 birds in lowland rainforests. Due to the massive increase in civilization, the species of African Grey parrot is continuously declining. This destruction of habits not only leads to a decrease in population, but also these parrots are moving to the areas where the human population has penetrated in their natural habitat. This situation not only stressful for birds but also for the farmers whose fields are being disturbed by this timid creature.

Types of African Grey parrots

We have heard only the name of the African Grey parrot not about its subspecies. However, there are two types of differnt species that are found all around the pet industry. The most famous one is Congo African Grey, which is the larger species of this parrot and most common among the breeders. The other smaller species is Timneh African Grey, which was recognized as a sperate species in 2012. Congo African greys have a light grey colored plumage with solid black beak while the Timneh African Grey has a darker plumage then Congo African Grey. Moreover, Timneh Grey has horn colored upper mandible that is lighter in color than Congo African Grey. The most important thing among both breeds is their level of intelligence that is the same.

Caring and Feeding of African Greys

Spending time with African Greys help in making a strong bond with them and burning their energy, which make them more active and emotionally satisfied.
